Ladies and Gentlemen:

My name is ___。Today,My topic is Honesty.

As a correspondent of the Qingdao Morning News, I visited Dr. James Gilman, the President of the International Committee for Marco Polo Studies in England. In this picture, this is James, and this is me and we are looking at a dragon’stooth. This is a true story.

65 years ago, James lived in Qingdao. Then he was only 5 years old. Heoften visited the Aquarium and was fascinated by a creature on display there, which he thought was a dragon. He was afraid of its sharp teeth and wanted oneto keep as a treasure.

In the late 1930s, when the Japanese occupied Qingdao, his family had toleave. On his last day in Qingdao, he ran to the Aquarium and pulled out one ofthe teeth from the dragon’s mouth.

He kept the tooth for the next 65 years, but the feeling of guilt at havingstolen it was there in the background all through his life. It was always on hisconscience, and the feeling intensified as he became older. Finally he decidedto put right his childish error. In 20_, he visited Qingdao and returned it tothe Aquarium with his sincere apologies. He received a warm welcome.

When James visited Qingdao, I accompanied him all the time and reported onhis visit. I was deeply touched by his honesty. It has taught me a lot. I thinkto err is human. The important thing is to have the courage to admit and correctone’s error.

Honesty is a vital quality of human behaviour. So we should try to keep anhonest mind in everything we say and do. I would like to say to all of myfriends: Let’s be honest people of good moral character.

Honesty is one of the most treasured traditional values in China. Thechildren are taught to be honest when they are very young. At schools thestudents are also instructed to be honest.

However, with the development of society, we often hear complaints aboutdishonesty. Reports with the theme of dishonesty often appear in the media. Forexample, some people try to get rich and live a comfortable life. But they donot work hard honestly, instead they cheat others. They sell something quiteordinary at a very high price. Some people's delaying paying back the loan canserve as another example. Some people, including some college students, get loanfrom the bank, and promise to pay within, say, 3 years. However, they don't dothat.

The dishonest people sometimes can get benefit from their behaviors. Sosome people assert that dishonesty can bring people benefit, while honesty onlymakes people suffer. Is that so? Definitely not. It is always true that honestyis the best policy. It pays to be honest. The cheater selling “the treasure”mentioned above will surely be disclosed and punished some day.

On the contrary, if he had been honest, neither the buyer nor he himselfwould have suffered. The people who do not return money in time will sooner orlater become infamous, and will not get the money from others again. If he hadacted differently, he would have earned respect and trust, meanwhile, the bankwould not have suffered from loss.

Almost all of us heard the story “Here Comes the Wolf” when we were littlekids. What we can learn from the story is that we must be honest. However, there’re lots of phenomena of dishonesty nowadays。

Being dishonest does great harm not only to other people but also toyourself. Take the case of fake milk powder for example. After drinking thiskind of milk, the babies had big heads while their legs and arms were stillthin, which badly affected their health. To our great relief, the producers gotaccused and punished for all the serious consequences in the end。

Having the reputation of being honest and reliable will make other peopletrust you, which will provide you many benefits and give you opportunities thatothers may not get. Being honest, you will find it easier to cooperate withothers and people will be friendly to you and support you. In a sense, if lifeis a long journey, honesty will be the backpack that should be taken along allthe way. Let’s pick up our “backpack”—honesty, and start the wonderfuljourney!

My grandparents believed you were either honest or you weren‘t. There wasno in between.

They had a simple motto hanging on their living-room wall: "Life is like afield of newly fallen snow; where I choose to walk every step will show. "Theydidn‘t have to talk about it--they demonstratedthe motto by the way theylived.

They understood instinctively that integrity means having a personalstandard of morality and ethics that does not sell out to expediency and that isnot relative to the situation at hand. Integrity is an inner standard forjudging your behavior.Unfortunately, integrity is in short supply today--andgetting scarcer. But it is the real bottom line in every area of society. And itis something we must demand of ourselves.

A good test for this value is to look at what I call the Integrity Trial, which consists of three key principles:Stand firmly for your convictions in theface of personal pressure. When you know you‘re right, you can‘t back down.

Always give others credit that is rightfully theirs. Don‘t be afraid ofthose who might have a better idea or who might even be smarter than youare.

Be honest and open about who you really are. People who lack genuine corevalues rely on external factors--their looks or status---in order to feel goodabout themselves. Inevitably they will do everything they can to preserve thisfacade, but they will do very little to develop their inner value and personalgrowth.

So be yourself. Don‘t engage in a personal cover-up of areas that areunpleasing in your life. When it‘s tough, do it tough. In other words, facereality and be adult in your responses to life‘s challenges.

Self-respect and a clear conscience are powerful components of integrityand are the basis for enriching your relationships with others.

Integrity means you do what you do because it‘s right and not justfashionable or politically correct. A life of principle, of not succumbing tothe seductive sirens of an easy morality, will always win the day. Mygrandparents taught me that.
